Jean George WILLE (Obermuhle 1715 - Paris 1808) "Elisabeth de Gouy Femme de Hyacinthe Rigaud" Original engraving dated in the plate on the bottom right 1743, from a subject by Hyacinthe Rigaud (in the Firmin Didot catalog cited in the Bibliography, it is specified that date of actual appearance of the press to be established in July 1744). Nice specimen printed on thick laid paper typical of the eighteenth century bearing the watermark "Two-headed eagle with crown" referable to French paper production of the eighteenth century, trimmed just to the imprint of the slab which still appears always visible, with some stains of old gluing and other minimal edge defects but overall in excellent condition. Our copy differs from that of the National Gallery of Art in Washington in the absence of the address of the Imprimerie Lamoreux in Paris in the lower center which denotes a nineteenth-century print run. In the original painting by Rigaud, executed between 1707 and 1710 and which is now part of the collections of the Louvre, the beloved wife known in her youth but married at the age of 51 is portrayed. Bibliography: Duplessis "De la Gravure de Portrait en France" Paris 1875 pages 114 and 115. Firmin-Didot "Catalog raisonné de la Collection de Portraits de l'école francaise" Paris 1875-1877 n ° 2446. LeBlanc "Manuel de l'Amateur d'Estampes" Paris 1889 vol.4 pag 228 n ° 33. www.artsy.net/artwork/johann-georg-wille-after-hyacinthe-rigaud Measurements in mm: 475ca x 355ca (the sheet)
